Product Overview
Reversible aerial tramway is a premium shuttle type aerial ropeway system. It operates two large passenger cabins shuttling back and forth between two terminals. While one cabin ascends, the other descends, acting as mutual counterweights.
Unlike circulating gondola lifts with multiple small cabins, the reversible aerial tramway features spacious high-capacity cabins, outstanding wind resistance, and ultra long unsupported spans. These characteristics make it the ideal landmark transportation solution for steep mountains, deep canyons, and cross-lake or cross-river scenic areas.
As a high-end sightseeing transit solution, the reversible aerial tramway minimizes intermediate support towers and reduces ecological disturbance to mountain terrain. It delivers a premium panoramic riding experience that has become signature infrastructure for world-famous tourist destinations.
The system is available in two structural configurations — bicable (2S) and tricable (3S). The bicable reversible aerial tramway uses two fixed track cables plus one haulage rope, suitable for most standard scenic routes. The tricable variant adds a third track cable for enhanced lateral stability, making it the preferred choice for ultra long spans and high-wind zones. Both configurations share the same counterweight shuttle principle and can be fully customized in cabin size, speed, and capacity.

Working Principle
The system adopts a bicable or tricable structure, including fixed track cables (load-bearing cables) and a circulating haulage rope. Passenger cabins are rigidly connected to the haulage rope via carriers.
When cabins reach the upper or lower terminal, the drive system stops and reverses cable direction to realize round-trip shuttle operation. The descending cabin provides counterweight force to lower overall power consumption.
Multiple redundant safety control systems guarantee stable operation under complex weather conditions. The entire cycle — accelerate, cruise, decelerate, dwell, reverse — is fully automated and monitored in real time.
Drive and Counterweight Mechanism
The reversible aerial tramway relies on a drive station (usually at the upper terminal) equipped with a main electric motor and a backup diesel-hydraulic drive. When one cabin departs the lower station loaded with passengers, gravity pulling the descending cabin assists the ascent, significantly reducing motor power demand.
This counterweight principle means the system consumes far less energy per passenger-kilometer than a single-direction funicular or road shuttle on equivalent terrain. The energy-saving advantage becomes more pronounced as the vertical elevation difference increases.
Operating speed is adjustable between 6 and 12 m/s depending on line length and passenger flow. During peak hours, the system can run at full speed with minimal dwell time at terminals. During off-peak periods, speed is reduced to conserve energy while maintaining service frequency.
Core Advantages
Ultra long span capability
Supports unsupported spans up to 3,000 meters. This is ideal for crossing valleys, reservoirs, and wide rivers where constructing intermediate towers would be technically difficult or environmentally damaging. Fewer support towers also mean reduced civil construction cost and shorter project timelines.
In practice, a single unsupported span of 2,000 to 3,000 meters can replace what would otherwise require three to five intermediate towers on a conventional ropeway. This dramatically reduces the footprint of construction activity in sensitive mountain ecosystems.
Excellent wind stability
Heavy load-bearing cables and rigid trolley design enable safe operation under strong crosswinds. The system delivers longer annual available operation time compared with ordinary circulating gondolas, which typically suspend service at lower wind thresholds.
Tricable reversible aerial tramway systems offer particularly superior lateral stability. The three-track-cable configuration distributes wind loads more evenly, allowing continued operation in crosswind conditions where single-cable systems must shut down.
Large single cabin passenger capacity
Cabin sizes are fully customizable: 15 to 150 passengers per cabin. The spacious interior accommodates optional full panoramic glass, wheelchair-accessible layouts, and standing-room configurations for high-throughput scenarios.
For destinations with variable demand, cabin capacity can be specified to match both peak and off-peak conditions. A larger cabin reduces the number of round trips needed during peak hours, while the counterweight shuttle principle ensures consistent cycle times regardless of load.
Adaptable to extreme terrain
Suitable for vertical elevation differences up to 1,900 meters, steep slopes exceeding 45 degrees, and alpine high-altitude scenic spots where road construction is impractical or environmentally prohibited.
The reversible aerial tramway also performs well in cold-climate environments. Heated cable guides, de-icing systems, and cold-rated cabin components enable reliable winter operation at ski resorts and glacier tourism sites.
High safety redundancy
Dual drive units, emergency backup power, automatic monitoring systems, and onboard rescue evacuation equipment ensure compliance with international ropeway safety standards.
The bicable and tricable structures provide inherent redundancy. Track cables are designed with a minimum safety factor well above standard engineering margins. Anemometers at terminals and mid-span provide real-time wind data, triggering automatic speed reduction or controlled shutdown when thresholds are exceeded.Dual drive unit, emergency backup power, automatic monitoring system, onboard rescue evacuation equipment, complying with international ropeway safety standards.
Landmark commercial value
The impressive visual presence of a reversible aerial tramway often becomes the core scenic highlight of a destination. It improves tourist attraction reputation, extends average visitor stay time, and increases ticket revenue.
Many internationally renowned destinations use their reversible aerial tramway as the signature image in marketing materials. The structure itself becomes a landmark that visitors photograph and share, generating organic promotional value that complements paid marketing efforts.

Typical Application Scenarios
The reversible aerial tramway is uniquely suited to scenarios where conventional road transport is impractical, environmentally damaging, or unable to deliver a premium sightseeing experience.
- High-altitude mountain scenic spots and national geoparks
- Canyon and alpine glacier tourist resorts
- Cross-river and cross-lake sightseeing transportation
- Luxury mountain resorts and ski resort peak access
- Urban landmark aerial tourist transit systems
- Sightseeing transport for islands and coastal scenic zones
Each scenario benefits from the reversible aerial tramway’s ability to span large distances with minimal ground disturbance. Mountain scenic spots gain a signature attraction that transports visitors to peaks otherwise reachable only by long hiking trails. Canyon and glacier resorts use the system to provide safe year-round access across terrain that would be impassable by road for much of the year.
Cross-water applications — including rivers, lakes, and coastal straits — leverage the ultra long unsupported span capability to connect scenic points without constructing bridge piers in the water. Urban installations transform the reversible aerial tramway into a moving observation deck, offering panoramic city views that become a tourist attraction in their own right.
